The John Pence Art Gallery in San Francisco is one of the original realist galleries in North America. Established over 30 years ago, the gallery primarily exhibits work from living academic artists but also displays art from 19th and 20th century painters.

There are approximately 10 exhibits per year either showing work from individual artists or work from a collection of artists that have been invited from around North America that align with a certain theme.

We were made to feel welcome when we visited and our questions were embraced by the helpful staff. There was little coercion to buy anything as well. However, if you are a serious realist collector then this is a good place to stop off although you do need to make an appointment first. The website will give you more details.

You will find artwork from Juliette Aristides, William Bartlett, Michael Bergt, Jacob Collins, Tony Curanaj, Donald Demers, Carl Dobsky, Douglas Flynt, Adam Forfang Sarah Lamb, Dean Larson, Kate Lehman, Steven J. Levin, Joseph McGurl, Edward Minoff, Dorothy Morgan, Jacob A. Pfeiffer, Nicholas M. Raynolds, Travis Schlaht, Stock Schlueter, Randall Sexton, Hugh Shurley, Anthony Waichulis, and Will Wilson.

The John Pence Gallery represents the estates of Minerva J. Chapman (1858-1947), Mary Foote (1872-1968), and Robert Maione (1932-1987).

The gallery also carries examples of work by earlier American realists and has in its inventory (or recently sold) works by George Henry Boughton, Robert Brackman, Emil Carlsen, John F. Carlson, Frank Herrmann, Ferdinand Kaufmann, John Koch, Otis Oldfield, Walter Launt Palmer, Ferdinand Richardt, Frederick Shafer, Karl Schmidt, John Sloan, Millard Sheets, Joseph Stella, Gardner Symons, Abbott Thayer, Walter Ufer, Edward Vysekel, Marion Wachtel, Harry Wickey, and Harvey Otis Young.
