The Gallery Anthony Curtis in Boston represents over 30 artists ranging from emerging to mid-career and was one of the first galleries in the US to show aboriginal art from Australia. The Gallery Anthony Curtis exhibits art that fits outside of western culture, however a lot of the artists themselves are from the American continent. You will find work from the likes of Gloria Adams, Johanne Cullen and William Baterman.

The gallery strives to use the art to make strong aesthetic, cultural and social impacts to which is evident from the types of artists they represent. They run about 12 exhibits a year either showing the works of the individual artist or as a theme with various of the artists present. One of the ones we enjoyed was the group exhibition of American artists whose work is inspired by their journeys on the other side of the World. It was great to share the experience of the artist and the inspiration behind their art.

We would say this gallery is certainly for those who are interested in tribal art and indeed those who want to add something different to their home or office. The gallery is well laid out and the staff are a great source of knowledge as to the background of each piece.

The Aboriginal 2D artists at the Gallery Anthony Curtis include Abbie Loy Kemarre, Ngoia Pollard Napaltjarri, Dorothy Napangardi, Lilly Kelly Napangardi, Lorna Fencer Napurrula, Mitjili Napurrula, Ningura Napurrula, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, Gloria Tamerre Petyarre, Kathleen Petyarre, Minnie Pwerle, George Tjungurrayi, Willy Tjungurrayi, Barbara Weir.

The Aboriginal 3D Artists at the Gallery Anthony Curtis include Richard Gandhuwuy, Melba Gunjarrwanga, Paul Nabulumo Namarinjmak, Bede Tungatalum, Yalpi Yunupinu, Lanug Yunupinu

The American, Canadian, and Asian Artists at the Gallery Anthony Curtis include Gloria Adams, Nancy Baker, William Bateman, Kathleen Cammarata, Chris Lanhui Chou, Johanne Cullen, Martin Douvil, François Escalmel, Cecily Barth Firestein, Duc Nghia Phan, Jerome Prieur, Jean-Daniel Rohrer, Marie-Josée Roy, Meng Zhao

Through Project W (w stands for wanderlust), GAC continues its commitment to non-western art, with a focus on contemporary Aboriginal art from Australia and historical religious and architectural art from Southeast Asia. Our mission is to raise the awareness of these art forms that are less presented in America and to contrast different art traditions while revealing the connected messages underlying these endeavors.

Established in 1999, the Berenberg Art Gallery in Boston hosts an interesting mix of artists. A lot of them are self-taught and are well outside the mainstream art scene and indeed the mainstream art market in general.

A lot of the work produced is done in isolation due to the artists living in remote locations or because the artists are institutionalized due to physical or emotional disabilities. You can not really pinpoint the general theme of the art within the gallery as the styles vary, the techniques are certainly different to what you are used to and the subject matter varies across the board. A lot of the works of art are created from resources to hand. However, this makes for significantly distinctive pieces that vary from the ridiculous to the sublime. You can expect to see drawings, paintings, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics all based around the artists vision.

We enjoyed our short time in the gallery and really got to understand that one of the main purposes of the Berenberg was to show, and educate, to the public that there are artists out there that have artistic gifts regardless of not attending ‘art school’.

With over 80 artists there is certainly not a lack of art to look at. You will find artists like Cher Chaffer, Jennifer Harrison and Scot Griffin. The Berenberg runs around 4 to 5 exhibits a year and we would recommend going to visit if you are interested in viewing work that does not conform to the usual rules and regulations of a ‘normal’ gallery.

A bit about the director, Lorri Berenberg, from the Berenberg Gallery website – all credit Berenberg Gallery:

Lorri Berenberg opened the Berenberg Gallery after completing a twentyfive year career in museum education. As associate director of education at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston she developed some of the museum’s most popular and innovative programs. Her passion for contemporary folk and self-taught art comes as a natural extension of her work with artists, individuals with disabilities, and members of diverse communities. She brings to the gallery a strong knowledge of the field and the expertise of introducing works of art to a broad public.

Located in the Metro-Boston area, the Axiom Gallery has been running for just over 4 years. You will find both emerging and established artists being represented here all working in new media. The artists are from around the world.

The main aim of this art gallery in Boston is to allow experimental media as an art form to become enriched and for it to grow. It wants people to become more informed of the scene that it is in and also for it to become popular in the art world and indeed popular in general. The gallery welcomes its artists to be different and does not set up any guidelines that it wants them to follow.

What is great about this gallery is that it will appeal to both the art lover and the novice interested in something a bit different from the norm. With Exhibits given names like COLLISION:technomorph and Some Sort of Uncertainty, who could resist going to find out exactly what is on show… And you won’t be disappointed. One of the exhibits, ‘Witnesses’, was named in the Top 10 Show of 2007 by the Boston Globe.

The Axiom Gallery is certainly going for quality over quantity with just 4 exhibits a year. It certainly makes for a treat if you get to go, so we recommend getting on to the website for upcoming events and booking a date in your diary to go along (if you are going to be in Boston that is). The dedicated staff with the aid of volunteers will ensure you make the most out of your visit.

From the Axiom Gallery website – all credit Axiom Gallery:

Exhibiting new and experimental media is a challenge for every contemporary art space – a challenge that AXIOM strives to meet through innovative exhibitions and experimental performance.

Art is evolving into its new form, encompassing more than classical genres. The artists today, use digital media in an appropriation of current societal trends as an enabling technology, which allows for innovation in contemporary art.

AXIOM strives to reach a wider audience of viewers through its support of new and experimental media and the artists who make it, in order to captivate and involve people of all ages in hopes for the growth of a bright future for art in years to come.

The Samson Projects art gallery in Boston, represents both emerging and established artists and is determined to showcase the most exciting contemporary art out there covering all of the spectrum from film to music, from performance to design.

You will find the Samson Projects attending a lot of art fairs throughout North America. Their keenness to get out there and drive their mission forward is impressive and one that both the artists and avid follower admires.

You will find the work varies quite significantly in price, which does mean you have to be careful not to fall in love with anything until you have read the price tag. However, there is nothing wrong with a bit of window shopping and just viewing the art on display. That is certainly what we did anyway!

From the Samson Projects website – all credit Samson Projects:

Samson Projects, established in 2004, blends the best elements of a commercial gallery with the experimental attitude of an alternative exhibition space.

We represent a group dedicated to furthering contemporary art. They are Nicole Cherubini, SunTek Chung, Taylor Davis, Craig Drennen, Jeffrey Gibson, Gabriel Martinez, Rune Olsen and Suzannah Sinclair.

The Boston Globe also has a bit to say about the gallery – all credit the Boston Globe Magazine:

Love it or hate it – that’s Camilo Alvarez’s hope for all who enter his South End gallery, Samson Projects, which opened in 2004. New York-born, Dominican-raised, Alvarez has drawn strong reaction with his exhibits, including one devoted entirely to bad behavior and offensiveness. Having videos in that show prompted questions of whether videos are art and whether they can sell. His goal is to show art that is culturally significant, not necessarily saleable or even to his own taste: “When Picasso came out, people were dumbfounded. Same thing with the Impressionists; they were completely pariahed.”

The MPG Contemporary Gallery in Boston exhibits both abstract and representational artists and features sculpture as well as two dimensional work. MPG is dedicated to exhibiting emerging artists.

This Boston gallery has received good reviews and some of the artwork that have been featured have earned a few notable awards. The gallery is now a virtual gallery and Michael Price will continue as a consulting curator.

From the MPG Contemporary Gallery website – all credit MPG Contemporary Gallery:

Dedicated to contemporary artists, MPG was opened by Michael Price in May 1998. The new gallery received favorable reviews in ART News, The Boston Globe, and The Boston Herald; artsMEDIA printed both a review and a full page interview. ART New England in writing of MPG’s first exhibit of sculpture, mixed media, and works on paper observed that MPG “is a welcome addition to the (Boston) contemporary art scene.”

Other successes at MPG include a print exhibit featuring Louise Bourgeois, Helen Frankenthaler, and Henry Moore along with emerging Boston artists. As part of that exhibit, the Boston Public Library showed 50 years of Boston prints from its collection.

Paintings have been presented at MPG in collections such as Symbolic Woman: Women as Subject and Object, Still Life, Wild Life, The American Land, and More Abstract. Three Photographers featured the work of David Plowden, whose retrospective, Imprints was published by Little, Brown.

In 1999 Carl Belz, Director Emeritus of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis, juried a national competition for emerging artists of New Art at MPG. Now an annual event, New Art has been curated by among others Rachel R. Lafo, DeCordova Museum; Alison Kemmerer, Addison Gallery of American Art; and Theodore E. Stebbins, Curator at the Fogg Museum, Harvard University. This year, Linda Norden, curator of Contemporary Art, Fogg Art Museum and Curator of the American Pavilion at next summer’s Venice Bienale curated New Art 2005.

Before opening MPG, Michael initiated and directed an arts program/exhibition space for refugees and immigrants. At various times he has been an attorney, community organizer, therapist, and originator/director of a legal aid clinic for Palestinians in Jerusalem. Michael has a Master’s degree in city planning from MIT and is co-author of Boston’s Immigrants: 1840-1925, a history in prints and photographs.

The Diamond-Newman Fine Arts gallery in Boston claims to exhibit some of the finest contemporary art there is to offer from both American and international artists.

This Boston gallery displays its’ work very similar to the art salons from the 19th century, unlike most of the galleries today. One of their key drives is to make art accessible to everyone and to disperse of the potential ’snobbery’ that surrounds the art scene. The staff are keen to help out the novice collector and won’t flinch at even the simplest of questions. This is a great place to get started and rummage around for answers that you might have been to embarrassed to ask before.

Diamond-Newman Fine Arts gallery in Boston represents artists including JC Airoldi, Diane Ayott, Heath Ballowe, Robert Brinkerhoff, Scott Cahaly, Nic Coviello, Joseph D’Apice, David Diamond, Jonathan Eiten, Sean Farrell, Frances Ferdinands, Andrew Gillet, Greg Haynes, Peter Kassel, CJ Lori, Beverly Mitchell, Tim Neill, Patricia Nguyen, Kenda North, Jack O’Hearn, Jessie Pollock, Mauricio Puente, Tobia Rava, Lynda Ray, Vincent Romaniello, Albric Soly, Elizabeth Tyson, Christine Vaillancourt, Louise Weinberg, Doug Wiltraut, Mikel Wintermantel, Alexander Yelagin

From the Diamond-Newman Fine Arts website – all credit Diamond-Newman Fine Arts:

We built our reputation as astute art collectors with a keen eye for established and emerging talent of the 20th and 21st century art world. We understand that collecting art begins with small steps and we work with our clients to establish their trust and confidence in the quality of art we display.

Our business derives, first and foremost, out of our passion for art. It is our feeling that artists that display feeling, mood and emotion within the viewer, can enhance our lives and make our living spaces a more enjoyable and enriched environment to live in. We believe in “Art that makes Sense” and stimulates the senses.

Gallery XIV art gallery in Boston is an exciting gallery that is determined to represent what contemporary art has to offer the world. The artists range from emerging to established.

The gallery runs about 3 to 5 exhibits a year either focused on the individual or a theme. One of the ones we find really exciting is the Canvasation Project. There is some information on this on the Gallery XIV website – all credit Gallery XIV:

The Canvasation Project engages small groups of artists to create large paintings collaboratively while filmmakers capture their creative process. Individual and collective notions of artistic interpretation, visual language, and communication are filmed to explore the artist’s individual method of creative thinking and problem solving.

The first canvasation was created in May 2007 by 7 artists exhibiting works at Paul Alexander Gallery (Framingham, MA) in a show curated by William Kerr and filmed by Robert and Yvonne Marra Lamothe. Robert and Yvonne are both exhibiting photographers and painters, while also art educators in the Boston Public Schools. They have been recording and investigating artists’ creative flow for over twenty years.

Groups participating in the Canvasation Project 2008 came from Paul Alexander Gallery, Kingston Gallery, The Art Institute of Boston, Hill House, The Miracle 5, Montserrat College of Art, Boston Public School Teacher Artists, 450 Harrison Avenue Artists, and Gallery XIV.

Artists represented at Gallery XIV include Britt Hennig, Justin Tolentino, Marcus Jansen, Marilyn Ivy, Matt Hosey, Michael Costello, Michael Santini, Narda Boughton, Paul Riedl, Rob Wilstein, Ron English, Rose Abrahamson, Ursula Goeb and Will Kerr.

From the Gallery XIV website – all credit Gallery XIV:

Gallery XIV represents contemporary artists whose works achieve balance between conceptual, avante-garde, and traditional modes of representation. We aspire to present the most well crafted and articulated contemporary art that challenges both the modern aesthetic and contemporary cultural norms. Gallery XIV is located along the gallery walk in Boston’s SOWA Arts Disctrict, at 37 Thayer Street, in the South End – and presents changing exhibitions that showcase American and International artists.

The Boston Sculptors Gallery, self proclaimed to be the center of Boston’s sculpture scene, represents 28 members, showing off their exciting and innovative works of art.

We would say that if in Boston and you are into Sculpture, then this should be a place that you should visit. The fact that each artist only gets to show their work once every two years means that every sculpture exhibited has had every bit of effort put into it. This, of course, means that we get to enjoy the best work from every member time and time again.

The Boston Sculptors Gallery members include B. Amore, Caroline Bagenal, Laura Baring-Gould, Kim Bernard, Lorey Bonante, Benjamin S. Cariens, Murray Dewart, Donna Dodson, Laura Evans, Beth Galston, Christopher Frost, Peter DeCamp Haines, Jim Henderson, Penelope Jencks, Charles Jones, Peter Lipsitt, Michelle Lougee, Paul Meneses, David Naito, Larry Pollans, Robert Schelling, Eric Sealine, Nancy Selvage, Liz Shepherd, Julia Shepley, Mary Sherman, Maggie Stark, Jessica Straus, Margaret Swan, Marilu Swett, Hannah Verlin, Bill Wainwright, Ellen Wetmore, Joseph Wheelwright, Leslie Wilcox, Dan Wills and Andy Zimmermann. This list does change with old members leaving and new members coming on board.

From the Boston Sculptors Gallery website – all credit Boston Sculptors Gallery:

Boston Sculptors Gallery hosts two concurrent solo shows every month presenting the works of it 28 members through a two-year cycle including a group show featuring all of the members for the winter holidays.

This gallery is unusual in that it exclusively shows sculpture in a large space which is transformed every month by two of the twenty-eight members of this group. This gallery has won the acclaim of the Boston Globe art critic, Christine Temin, who listed it in her 1992 “Ten Best in the Visual Arts.” In 1995 Boston Magazine honored the gallery as the “Best Suburban Gallery in Boston”. Nick Capasso, Associate Curator of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park says, “The Boston Sculptors Gallery, one of the few cooperative sculpture galleries in the country, is among the most stimulating venues for three-dimensional contemporary art in the Northeast.”

Focused solely on fine art photography, the Robert Klein Art Gallery in Boston has been running for over 25 years. Exhibiting both established and emerging photographers, the gallery is determined to enhance the profile of photography to a high standard in quality.

The reason we like the Robert Klein Gallery so much is that you really get a strong sense that it gives a strong commitment to its artists and clients alike. A gallery that ‘cares’ also means that it won’t waste anyones time, which from a selfish perspective is great as you can expect only to see the best that they have to offer.

From the Robert Klein Gallery website – all credit Robert Klein Gallery:

The gallery deals with established photographers of the 19th and 20th centuries including those photographers who are considered masters or whose works have received critical acclaim and recognition, such as: Gustave LeGray, Eadweard Muybridge, Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, Irving Penn, Brassai, Henri Cartier Bresson, Mario Giacomelli, Helen Levitt, Yousuf Karsh, Irving Penn, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Charles Sheeler, and Walker Evans.

In addition, the gallery exhibition schedule is designed to introduce newer photographers to the public. Recently exhibited contemporary artists include: Michal Ronnen Safdie, Bill Jacobson, Jeff Brouws, Roger Ballen, Victor Schrager, Laura Letinsky, Sally Gall, John Dugdale, Kenro Izu, Michael Kenna and Arno Rafael Minkkinen.

As President of the Board of Directors of The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD), Robert Klein is dedicated to advancing the appreciation of the art of photography. Robert Klein Gallery is a member of The Boston Art Dealers Association (BADA), and the New England Appraisers Association. The extensive expertise of the gallery staff, and a commitment to meeting the art and collecting needs of clients are the guiding principles of the Robert Klein Gallery.

The gallery participates in numerous art fairs including Art Chicago, Paris Photo, Art Palm Beach, The Boston International Fine Art Fair, The AIPAD Photography Show (NYC), Photo LA and Photo San Francisco.

From the Nielsen Gallery website – all credit Nielsen Gallery:

Nielsen Gallery was founded in 1963 and is located in the historic Back Bay district of Boston at 179 Newbury Street. The directors of the gallery are Nina Nielsen, John Baker, and Josh Buckno.

In 2005, the AICA awarded “The Privilege of Solitude: Alfred Jensen and Forrest Bess” the national award for “Best Show in a Commercial Gallery.” Other major exhibitions have included “Forty Four Psychoanalytic Drawings (1939-41)” of Jackson Pollock, “The Self-Reliant Spirit,” (Albert Pinkam Ryder, Ralph Albert Blakelock, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley and four contemporary artists), and survey exhibitions of Albert York and Martin Ramirez.

The primary commitment of the gallery is to exhibit and support contemporary artists, whose personal visions resist categorization, including the estates of Porfirio DiDonna, Gregory Gillespie, Harvey Quaytman, and Christopher Wilmarth.
