The Metropolitan Museum of Art has an art collection that makes it one of the greatest galleries in the world. The gallery was founded in 1870, by a group of American citizens.

The gallery draws from a particularly impressive art collection, covering a wide variety of art. For example, the collection includes 19th and 20th century masters are well represented, but the Museum also includes ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian artefacts.

We particularly like the impressive impressionist and post-impressionist collection, and the excellent American art. Another section that is particularly popular is the ‘museum within a museum’, which hosts a fantastic display of works from Asia.

Extract from the art galleries website – credit The Metropolitian Museum of Art:

The Metropolitan’s paintings collection began in 1870, when three private European collections, 174 paintings in all, came to the Museum. A variety of excellent Dutch and Flemish paintings, including works by such artists as Hals and Van Dyck, was supplemented with works by such great European artists as Poussin, Tiepolo, and Guardi.

The collections continued to grow for the rest of the 19th century – upon the death of John Kensett, for example, 38 of his canvases came to the Museum. But it is the 20th century that has seen the Museum’s rise to the position of one of the world’s great art centers. Some highlights: a work by Renoir entered the Museum as early as 1907 (today the Museum has become one of the world’s great repositories of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art)…in 1910 the Metropolitan was the first public institution to accept works of art by Matisse…by 1979 the Museum owned five of the fewer than 40 known Vermeers…the Department of Greek and Roman Art now oversees thousands of objects, including one of the finest collections in glass and silver in the world…The American Wing holds the most comprehensive collection of American art, sculpture, and decorative arts in the world…the Egyptian art collection is the finest outside Cairo…the Islamic art collection is without peer…and so on, through many of the 17 curatorial departments.

In 1880, the Metropolitan Museum moved to its current site in Central Park. The original Gothic-Revival-style building has been greatly expanded in size since then, and the various additions (built as early as 1888) now completely surround the original structure. The present facade and entrance structure along Fifth Avenue were completed in 1926.

A comprehensive architectural plan for the Museum approved in 1971 was completed in 1991. The architects for the project were Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates, and the overall aim was to make the Museum’s collections more accessible to the public, more useful to the scholars and, in general, more interesting and informative to all visitors.

Among the additions to the Museum as part of the master plan are: the Robert Lehman Wing (1975), which houses an extraordinary collection of Old Masters, as well as Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art; the installation in The Sackler Wing of the Temple of Dendur (1978), an Egyptian monument (ca. 15 B.C.) that was given to the United States by Egypt; The American Wing (1980), whose magnificent collection also includes 24 period rooms offering an unparalleled view of American art history and domestic life; The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing (1982) for the display of the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; the Lila Acheson Wallace Wing (1987), which houses modern art; and the Henry R. Kravis Wing, devoted to European sculpture and decorative arts from the Renaissance to the beginning of the 20th century.

With the building now complete, the Metropolitan Museum continues to refine and reorganize the collections in its existing spaces. In June 1998, the Arts of Korea gallery opened to the public, completing a major suite of galleries – a “museum within the Museum” – devoted to the arts of Asia. In October 1999 the renovated Ancient Near Eastern Galleries reopened. And a complete renovation and reinstallation of the Greek and Roman Galleries is underway: the first phase, The Robert and Renée Belfer Court for early Greek art, opened in June 1996; the New Greek Galleries premiered in April 1999; and in April 2000 the Cypriot Galleries will open to the public.

Max Lang Gallery, in the heart of the New York Chelsea district, exhibits works from emerging to internationally acclaimed artists. Max Lang started in 2006, and focuses on contemporary and modern art.

The art at Max Lang is supplied by over 60 internationally based artists. You will find work from the likes of Andy Warhol, Wolfgang Flad, George Rickey and Liu Ding. For those with wider interests in design, Max Lang also has some interesting furniture designs; if you are on the lookout for something different, we recommend a visit.

When you first enter Max Lang, you will appreciate how much emphasis is placed on representing art with a tangible artistic merit. The gallery is clearly keen to show how fine art can be incorporated into peoples’ lifestyles and their homes. Max Lang has, in fact, received praise from its peers for attracting people who are not a typical art lover.

Max Lang Gallery runs between 10 to 12 exhibits a year, some focusing on particular artists, whilst others follow an event-oriented theme. We got a chance to go to the Asian Art Now exhibit, which was great. It was interesting to see as a contrast to some of the controversy that surrounded the Olympic Games.

This is not one of the those galleries in which you would expect to pull out a hidden gem. Any artist working with Max Lang are ‘discovered’ – even if they were not previously. As such, we expect that Max Lang sells its art to serious art collectors and/or the relatively well-off.

If you are not in that category, do not worry. The gallery prides itself in being accessible, and goes the extra mile to help and educate. We love this enlightened approach, for all the obvious reasons, but also because it makes solid business sense – by treating window shoppers well, there is every opportunity that the person will return with the intention of buying in the future.

The 5,000 square foot, two-storey building allows you to wander around and in the ambient lighting it is perhaps a good place to take someone you care about.

The Max Lang Gallery is open: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm

229 10th Avenue,
New York 10011,
USA

Berry Hill’s roots are in American art, but they started up a contemporary art section in 1989. Today, the Gallery actually exhibits contemporary art more frequently than it does American Art. European art is also covered, but in less depth, and with fewer exhibitions. However, the European art they do show is of excellent quality. In total, the gallery runs about 3 to 4 exhibits a year.

The gallery takes pride in its confidential service to estates, museums and private collectors offering quality advice and guidance. It is also interested in collecting works either through outright purchase or via a commission.

If you are a serious collector, and want to arrange a viewing appointment, it would make sense to contact the gallery ahead of your visit (particularly if traveling to New York for a short trip) to ensure that the gallery can accommodate you.

We found the gallery eager to please and the staff will go out of their way to assist in any inquiries that you have. What is worth mentioning is that the works are for the more experienced buyer. That is not to say the gallery is gauche in any way but the art they have fits in with the needs of a connoisseur.

Found in the Chelsea district of New York and running for over 20 years, the Agora Art Gallery promotes both national and international artists. You will find a variety of art available to view including modern, impressionist, landscape, fantasy, wildlife, pop art, abstract, expressionist and more. They have three artists currently in residence including Katrin Alvarez, Philippe Ringlet and Ernestine Tahedl. However, they exhibit work from artists all around the world giving you a great selection of work to look at and, of course, purchase.

The gallery exhibits at least 12 times a year with a new exhibit each month. We are looking forward to going to see Matrix of the Mind: Contemporary Fine Art by Japanese Artists. The gallery is well laid out and and there is enough room to really enjoy what is on display.

The Agora Gallery offers art to the most discernible of collectors. It also offers services to art consultants, corporate art consultants, architects and interior designers as well as business, government, diplomatic and social VIPs. The collective experience of the staff in the art gallery offers an impressive resume but bare in mind this means that you can not waste their time. The gallery is not for customers with a low budget.

A bit about the director from the Agora Gallery website – all credit Agora Gallery:

Angela Di Bello, Gallery Director, Brings to Agora Gallery over 25 years of experience in the New York art market, as a private and corporate fine art consultant and as a fine art administrator; representing artists and placing their work with many Fortune 500 companies including AT&T, British Airways, The Federal Reserve Bank of NY, and Pfizer Corp Inc, as well as prominent private art collections. As the director of the prestigious Gallery at Lincoln Center, Ms. Di Bello was instrumental in developing the careers of numerous artists; placing paintings, sculpture, and photography with significant collectors. While at Lincoln Center, she also established the Metropolitan Opera Guild Print Program.

The Agora Gallery is open: Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm

Warde Nasse art gallery in New York features an extensive number of artists. There is a wide variety of artistic styles and if you are in to contemporary art there is a large selection on display. The artists may not be that well known but they are certainly original in what they do. You have available to view any thing from phantasmagoria paintings to shaman art. The gallery covers 2,000sq feet and accommodates about 15,000 visitors per year.

The gallery runs approximately 11 exhibits a year all revolving around a theme. They also get involved in certain art fairs. The atmosphere makes for a very relaxing gallery – making it ideal for a repeat visit or for a visit when you’ve had a busy day. Be prepared, however, for contemporary art that falls outside of the norm and into the realm of provocative. The gallery runs a non censorship policy meaning the artist on show is free to exhibit what they want, how they want.

Extract from the Galleries website – all credit Ward-Nasse:

The Ward-Nasse Gallery is a non-profit, artist administered alternative space in the heart of SoHo, dedicated to the presentation of the visual, spoken, and performing arts. All artists are given the opportunity to present their work to the public regardless of the artist’s age, race, gender, or beliefs

Ward-Nasse offers members a FREE CONSULTING SERVICE. This includes artists’ books that are kept on display in the gallery during all exhibitons and entry of each artist into a computerized database organized according to style and media. The database allows for inquiries that will direct collectors and other art professionals to the books of artists appropriate for their needs.

This gallery does not have an artistic mission at its heart. Instead the underlying driver is that the gallery should help promote the independence of the Tibet’s culture. As such, there is much more going on here than you would get at a regular art gallery – educational programmes, workshops and so on. This may or may not be an extra attraction to you, but we will focus here on the art gallery.

The 2000sq foot gallery includes exhibitions of both contemporary and classical art works either from Tibet or inspired by the Tibetan culture. Works appear from private collections and museums and there is even work from Tibet House’s Repatriation Collection. If you are interested in Tibetan art, or simply want a change, this gallery is recommended. If you are also interested in the wider cultural aspects, this will become a must visit destination. The gallery is open to the public and even includes a Tibetan shrine room for meditation.

Past exhibitions have included work from Martin Gray, in which there were photos of his excursions to sacred lands, and painter Kongtrul Jigme Namgyel, to which there was a real vision of showing how meditation and art heavily integrate with each other.

An extract from the Tibet House Art Gallery website – all credit the Tibet House Art Gallery:

Our dream is to provide access to people around the globe – including the large Tibetan community living in exile – to a vast, rich treasury of Tibetan art and culture. Bit by bit, we aim to create an extensive “museum online,” enabling us to share Tibet House collections and educational programs with a much wider audience through a variety of features, including online video and audio.

This gallery focuses on dealing in nineteenth and early twentieth-century American art. The artists who have had or do have works with the gallery are pretty much a list of the best and brightest of the genre. Therefore, if American art is something that interests you, a visit to this gallery is a must.

One of the primary goals of the art gallery is to continually educate the American public about its artistic and cultural roots.

Exhibitions tend to run for no more than two-months, and the gallery covers 12,000sq feet. We think this makes the gallery appealing not only to those who are mad about the type of art on display, but also those who do not want to plan too much time planning their schedule in advance – because the quality of work on display, and the regular turnover of art on exhibit means that your visit is bound to be a pleasurable one.

The gallery is a member of many art organizations including the Art and Antique Dealers League of America, the Appraisers Association of America, the Antiques Council, the Confederation Internationale des Negociants en Oeuvres d’Art, the Fine Art Dealers Association (Gavin Spanierman is a former President), the Thomas Cole Foundation (Mr. Spanierman is currently Executive Director and President) and the Thomas Cole House (Mr. Spanierman is on the Board of Advisors).

The gallery presents exhibitions of the highest quality including works on loan from museums and private collections, as well as works from our own holdings. The gallery is distinguished for its scholarship and actively supports research in American art.

The Spanierman Gallery is open:
Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 5:30pm

The Rosenberg & Stiebel Art Gallery in New York is unassuming from the outside but holds a lot of art treasures within, that will appeal to many an art connoisseur.

Best known for their expertise in 18th French art, this gallery actually focuses on high quality or “museum quality” art. This family owned/run business draw on an understanding of the art market formed over 125 years in order to continue to uncover the best available art.

Now in the Cloisters, the most famous painting handled by the gallery was the Merode Altarpiece. This is a 15th-century work by the Flemish artist Robert Campin. More than 300 works have passed through Rosenberg and Stiebel Gallery into the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cleveland Museum of Art have acquired over 100 pieces of work through the gallery and a painting of St. Catherine by Rubens, is now in the Toledo Museum, also via the gallery. The snippets of achievement alone show the respect the gallery holds.

Visits to the gallery are by appointment only, and the art for sale start at $5,000 (US Dollar), and run through to six, and occasionally seven figures. We would recommend this gallery to the collector who specialises in European art, and requires a strongly personalized service.

You can tell there is a true passion for art from the owner as he takes you through the history of the gallery on the website – all credit Rosenberg & Stiebel Gallery:

My great-grandfather, Jacob Rosenbaum, founded the firm somewhere between 1860 and 1870 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He started dealing from his home, handling what was known as “Kleinkunst”, small works of art which included porcelain from the German factories as well as renaissance and medieval objects. His son Isaak Rosenbaum continued the business and moved to a shop on the Rossmarkt, the fashionable shopping street of Frankfurt. Isaak had no children so he took his nephews, Saemy Rosenberg, Hans and Eric Stiebel (the latter being my father) into the business.

By the turn of the century the firm had added old master paintings to the inventory and in the 1920’s my uncle Hans moved to Paris where he started dealing in French 18th century furniture and objets d’art.

When Hitler came to power I. Rosenbaum set up shop in Amsterdam, Saemy opened a place of business with his brother Raphael in London, and, in 1939, my father started the gallery in New York. After World War II started Saemy and Hans came to New York.

Over the years the firm developed access to many important collections, dealing with families such as the Rothschilds, who also originated in Frankfurt. After World War II many great European families wanted funds to rebuild their properties and their lives so the Rosenbergs and Stiebels often acted as agents bringing great works of art from Europe to the U.S.

The most famous painting we ever handled is the Merode Altar by Robert Campin. It was sold to pay for a family wedding. In order to acquire this masterpiece for the Cloisters the trustees of the Metropolitan Museum, contrary to their established policy, were obliged to comply with the terms of the Comte de Grunne and pay for the picture before it actually came to the United States.

When families like the Rothschilds sold, museums and collectors took full advantage of the opportunities afforded by these deaccessionings. Many of the acquisitions made by private collectors such as Jayne and Charles Wrightsman and J. Paul Getty were later donated to museums (the Wrightsmans to the Metropolitan and Getty to his own institution). In one instance, a pair of Fragonards, sold by the French Rothschilds, ended up as stellar pieces split between the Thyssen Collection, now in the museum in Madrid and the Toledo Museum of Art… no not the town near Madrid but rather the great mid-western museum in Ohio!

By the 1950’s dealers started to specialize but the Rosenbergs and Stiebels continued to enjoy dealing the old fashioned way, in many different areas, but always keeping to the highest standard of quality. They were therefore very proud of selling to museums or collectors who would donate or leave their collections to museums. Over 300 works of art from our gallery are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and we sold over 100 works directly to the Cleveland Museum of Art.

My uncle died in 1964 and Saemy Rosenberg in 1970. A few years later I married an enthusiastic young curator, Penelope Hunter, who was in the Western European Arts Department at the Metropolitan Museum. After 13 years there and several as an independent curator and writer, during which time she translated Pierre Verlet’s standard work on French 18th Century Furniture, she finally joined my father and me at Rosenberg & Stiebel!

Together we pursued the family tradition of giving meaning to the term “museum quality”. Though we are best known for our expertise in the arts of 18th century France, over 125 years of experience allow us to continue in a wide range of European Paintings, drawings, sculpture and decorative arts.

In 2000 everything changed. Starting with a move to a town house from which to deal privately and the change of the corporate name to Stiebel, ltd.

After the success of the Stroganoff Exhibition, curated by my wife for the Portland Art Museum in Oregon, she returned to museum work full time (though long distance) as Portland’s Consulting Curator for European Art, based in New York.

My father having been a principal of the family firm for almost seventy years, and active until his last day, passed away that September.

Having been left on my own, I continue to be excited by finding “museum quality” treasures for clients we have known for generations, as well as new enthusiastic collectors, and I am enjoying welcoming them to our new home.
