There is a new exhibit roughly once every quarter.  We went to RECLAIMING MATERIALS: Four Sculptors Recycle. The title is fairly self explanatory but essentially 4 women sculptors used found materials to create excellent pieces of art and at the same time brought attention to the current environmental climate.

We found the gallery most helpful in the way they were willing to give a background into sculpture as well as talk about the pieces on display. You are really able to experience the passion that the staff and the artists bring to the exhibits. We would thoroughly recommend a visit even if you have to travel a distance to get there whether you are an experienced collector or just curious.

For 35 years, Pasquale Iannetti, with his gallery, has been dealing in Fine Original Prints and other works of Art from the 16th century to the present, on the 500 block of Sutter Street in cosmopolitan San Francisco. Florentine born Pasquale Iannetti, after studying economics at the University of Florence and attending the Accademia di Belle Arti in the same city, left his hometown and moved to San Francisco in 1969 as the West Coast director for London Arts, a firm with major galleries in London, New York and Detroit.

After co-founding Nabis Fine Art in New York and eventually selling his interest in the firm, Mr. Iannetti founded the gallery that bears his name. Following the success of his original gallery in San Francisco, additional galleries were opened in New York, San Francisco and Carmel. In 1991, Mr. Iannetti decided to close the new galleries and concentrate on providing the best quality Art to his main gallery in San Francisco.

Surrounded by the Art he diligently collects, Mr. Iannetti prides himself in being a provider of master works for both the amateur and the serious Art collector, and he believes that in collecting Fine Original Art, one can enjoy the works for their aesthetic value while they also appreciate over time. His extensive library allows for thorough research to be done on individual works to verify their authenticity and to formulate their historical and conceptual background. With Mr. Iannetti at its helm, the gallery, during its 39 years, has concentrated on educating the public with one-person exhibitions of works by numerous artists including, among others, Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Piranesi, Van Ostade, Claude Lorrain, Turner, Whistler, Renoir, Lautrec, Homer, Kollwitz, Léger, Matisse, Picasso, Bacon, Zuñiga, Luce and Magritte. Alfred C. Harrison, Jr., President: After ten years as a private collector and researcher, Alfred Harrison assumed ownership of the gallery in 1985. He is a lecturer and author of many articles on early California paintings as well as monographs on William Keith, L.P. Latimer, and Thaddeus and Ludmilla Welch. In 2006, he wrote an essay and catalogue entries for California Impressions: Landscapes from the Wendy Willrich Collection published by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He is currently at work on a history of nineteenth-century California painting and a monograph on John Ross Key. Alfred Harrison was the guest curator for “The Golden Age of Yosemite Painting, 1859-1930, A Centennial Tribute,” at the Transamerica Pyramid Lobby, San Francisco, CA. in 1991 and “Before the Bridge: 19th Century Paintings of the Golden Gate,” Transamerica Pyramid Lobby, San Francisco, CA in 2000. He also curated the San Francisco venue of the Gilbert Munger retrospective at The North Point Gallery in 2004 and the Bolinas Museum’s “Pastoral California: The Art of Thaddeus and Ludmilla Welch” in 2007.

Early landmarks included being the first gallery to show Andy Warhol in the Bay Area (1982), and holding the first exhibition on the West Coast (in a gallery or museum) of the Russian Avant-Garde 1910-1930 (1980, 17 more retrospectives have since been mounted).

In the 1990s Modernism highlighted its strong abstract program with the exhibition of “Four Abstract Classicists” (1993), a recreation of the show presented by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1959, while at the same time introducing America to the confrontational, and ofttimes disturbing, conceptual works of Austrian born artist Gottfried Helnwein (1992).

Recent years have seen the 25th anniversary of the gallery (2004), and with it many more firsts, including the first major exhibition of the works of Le Corbusier on the West Coast(2003), and just last year, the first major retrospective in the U.S. of the paintings, drawing, collages, and photographs of Erwin Blumenfeld (2006).

This 4,000 square foot gallery encompasses the ‘coolness’ of art and is certainly no place to go if you are looking for work from the old masters. No, the driver of the 111 Minna art gallery is to emit to the San Francisco art scene an ever changing and dynamic exhibition portfolio of the latest contemporary art. We throughly enjoyed ourselves here, attending the ‘Under the Sun’ exhibit, which was a surf documentary by Cyrus Sutton.

The physical environment at 111 Minna Gallery is an ideal setting for what the gallery is trying to achieve. The 16 foot high walls with floor to ceiling windows gives the feeling of an urban warehouse with exposed piping and hardwood floors.

Please bear in mind that you have to be 21 or over to attend mainly due to alcohol being sold on site. This does however, give the gallery a certain hipness and indeed a great place for a first or second date if you are looking to impress.

There are approximately 10 exhibits per year either showing work from individual artists or work from a collection of artists that have been invited from around North America that align with a certain theme.

We were made to feel welcome when we visited and our questions were embraced by the helpful staff. There was little coercion to buy anything as well. However, if you are a serious realist collector then this is a good place to stop off although you do need to make an appointment first. The website will give you more details.

We were lucky enough to attend at the time of the gallery’s popular Art of Baseball exhibition. This is where artists from around North America contribute works that fall around this game. The exhibit represents the the overall drive of the George Krevsky Gallery, which is to allow everyone access to historical fine art whether they are a novice or established collector.
