White Cube galleries cover two London locations. The other gallery is covered elsewhere in this guide (please click for the White Cube, Hoxton Square guide).

White Cube was set up by Jay Jopling in 1993 as a project room for contemporary art. Although it was one of the smallest exhibition spaces in Europe, it was arguably one of most influential commercial galleries of the past decade. Originally situated on the second floor of 44 Duke Street, St James’s, one of London’s most traditional art dealing streets, White Cube, Duke Street was, literally, a simple white cube, a room within a room, designed by the architect Claudio Silvestrin. (White Cube, Duke Street closed in 2002.)

White Cube’s premise is to allow the artist to present a single important work of art or body of art that would retain attention within a focused environment. This idea is similar in a way to Walter de Maria’s ‘Earth Room’ in New York. Artists have only ever been invited to exhibit once.

From White Cube’s website, all credit White Cube:

White Cube, Mason’s Yard opened in September 2006. It is located off Duke Street, St. James’s, home of the original White Cube gallery, on a site that was previously an electricity sub-station. Also designed by MRJ Rundell & Associates it is the first free-standing building to be built in the St James’s area for more than 30 years. The building houses a main, basement floor gallery which is a naturally lit, double-height space with a second gallery on street level providing 5000 ft² of exhibition space. White Cube, Mason’s Yard continues with an international, high profile programme of exhibitions and was launched with an inaugural exhibition by Gabriel Orozco.

Expect to see some thought provoking and possibly provocative art on display that will certainly grab your attention.

The Sculpturesite Gallery, an art gallery in San Francisco, has been running for over 15 years. It represents over 40 artists that range from mid-career to internationally established. The artists are selected for their approach to the art of sculpture and the contribution they make into this particular field. You will find the likes of Nina Lyons, James Lloyd, Mary Shaffer and Kathy Venter. The Sculpturesite Gallery is committed exclusively to modern and contemporary fine art sculpture and are the only one of its kind in Northern California.

There is a new exhibit roughly once every quarter. We went to RECLAIMING MATERIALS: Four Sculptors Recycle. The title is fairly self explanatory but essentially 4 women sculptors used found materials to create excellent pieces of art and at the same time brought attention to the current environmental climate.

We found the gallery most helpful in the way they were willing to give a background into sculpture as well as talk about the pieces on display. You are really able to experience the passion that the staff and the artists bring to the exhibits. We would thoroughly recommend a visit even if you have to travel a distance to get there whether you are an experienced collector or just curious.

From the Sculpturesite Gallery website – all credit Sculpturesite Gallery:

The landmark indoor-outdoor gallery is located one block from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, across the street from the Moscone Convention Center, in the heart of San Francisco’s Museum District. With a downtown plaza showcasing over fifteen large-scale works at any given time, the gallery offers a stunning and unique space for viewing exhibitions of sculpture in an urban setting, transforming a formerly pedestrian setting into a must-see cultural destination.

The Pasquale Iannetti art gallery in San Francisco, exhibits work from the 15th century to the present. Established in 1969, the art you will find includes fine original prints, drawings and unique works, including paintings and sculptures. There is predominately a mix of European, American and Mexican masters including Picasso, Rembrandt, Tissot and Degas.

A brief history of the Pasquale Iannetti Art Gallery – all credit Pasquale Iannetti Art Gallery:

For 35 years, Pasquale Iannetti, with his gallery, has been dealing in Fine Original Prints and other works of Art from the 16th century to the present, on the 500 block of Sutter Street in cosmopolitan San Francisco. Florentine born Pasquale Iannetti, after studying economics at the University of Florence and attending the Accademia di Belle Arti in the same city, left his hometown and moved to San Francisco in 1969 as the West Coast director for London Arts, a firm with major galleries in London, New York and Detroit.

After co-founding Nabis Fine Art in New York and eventually selling his interest in the firm, Mr. Iannetti founded the gallery that bears his name. Following the success of his original gallery in San Francisco, additional galleries were opened in New York, San Francisco and Carmel. In 1991, Mr. Iannetti decided to close the new galleries and concentrate on providing the best quality Art to his main gallery in San Francisco.

Surrounded by the Art he diligently collects, Mr. Iannetti prides himself in being a provider of master works for both the amateur and the serious Art collector, and he believes that in collecting Fine Original Art, one can enjoy the works for their aesthetic value while they also appreciate over time. His extensive library allows for thorough research to be done on individual works to verify their authenticity and to formulate their historical and conceptual background. With Mr. Iannetti at its helm, the gallery, during its 39 years, has concentrated on educating the public with one-person exhibitions of works by numerous artists including, among others, Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Piranesi, Van Ostade, Claude Lorrain, Turner, Whistler, Renoir, Lautrec, Homer, Kollwitz, Léger, Matisse, Picasso, Bacon, Zuñiga, Luce and Magritte. Mr. Iannetti also represents a small number of contemporary artists who show remarkable talent such as Marco Sassone, and sculptors Armando Amaya and Jeffrey Van Dyke.

The gallery has recently expanded its scope by exhibiting works by Minor Impressionists, otherwise known as Les Petits Maîtres, artists of great talent but who did not receive much deserved recognition during their lifetime, partly because of the demand of the market for big names, partly because of fashion, but also because some of these artists preferred to stay away from Paris, the capital at that time of the Art world.

Mr. Iannetti is an experienced Fine Art appraiser and authenticator of works on paper and has appeared on television, radio and newspapers as a commentator on Art matters.

The North Point art gallery in San Francisco exhibits nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century American and European paintings. The main focus is showing art from early California but there are some traditional contemporary paintings available. You will find work from Edwin Deakin, Thomas Hill, William Keith and Carol Peak. The gallery has work from over 60 artists.

This San Francisco art gallery has been running for over 35 years, moving from time to time, and is not based in an 1860s building in what was once the “Barbary Coast” of the Gold Rush era. A fine setting to enjoy the art that is on offer. If you are a collector in the field of American art, this gallery should be on your list to visit but as always, it is good to check their website for further details.

An extract from the North Point Gallery website about the personnel – all credit The North Point Gallery:

Alfred C. Harrison, Jr., President: After ten years as a private collector and researcher, Alfred Harrison assumed ownership of the gallery in 1985. He is a lecturer and author of many articles on early California paintings as well as monographs on William Keith, L.P. Latimer, and Thaddeus and Ludmilla Welch. In 2006, he wrote an essay and catalogue entries for California Impressions: Landscapes from the Wendy Willrich Collection published by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He is currently at work on a history of nineteenth-century California painting and a monograph on John Ross Key. Alfred Harrison was the guest curator for “The Golden Age of Yosemite Painting, 1859-1930, A Centennial Tribute,” at the Transamerica Pyramid Lobby, San Francisco, CA. in 1991 and “Before the Bridge: 19th Century Paintings of the Golden Gate,” Transamerica Pyramid Lobby, San Francisco, CA in 2000. He also curated the San Francisco venue of the Gilbert Munger retrospective at The North Point Gallery in 2004 and the Bolinas Museum’s “Pastoral California: The Art of Thaddeus and Ludmilla Welch” in 2007.

Modernism, an art gallery in San Francisco, has been running since 1969 displaying many different types of work including historical and contemporary, in media ranging from painting to photography, sculpture to performance. The artists come form and international roster and include the likes of Mark Stock, Gary Baseman, Robert Crumb and Bill Kane.

Modernism has run over 300 exhibits since its launch and currently represents over 60 artists making sure that every time you visit there is something new to see and enjoy. The owner, Martin Muller, strives to maintain the goal of exhibiting museum quality pieces at the Modernism Gallery. His efforts are clearly successful as you will find the gallery in press publications such as Forbes Magazine and the San Francisco Chronicle.

This San Francisco art gallery is well lit and spacious, which in turn helps the viewing experience.

From the Modernism website – all credit Modernism:

Early landmarks included being the first gallery to show Andy Warhol in the Bay Area (1982), and holding the first exhibition on the West Coast (in a gallery or museum) of the Russian Avant-Garde 1910-1930 (1980, 17 more retrospectives have since been mounted).

In the 1990s Modernism highlighted its strong abstract program with the exhibition of “Four Abstract Classicists” (1993), a recreation of the show presented by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1959, while at the same time introducing America to the confrontational, and ofttimes disturbing, conceptual works of Austrian born artist Gottfried Helnwein (1992).

Recent years have seen the 25th anniversary of the gallery (2004), and with it many more firsts, including the first major exhibition of the works of Le Corbusier on the West Coast(2003), and just last year, the first major retrospective in the U.S. of the paintings, drawing, collages, and photographs of Erwin Blumenfeld (2006).

In addition to the milestones above, Modernism prides itself on the scope of its program:

Historical exhibitions encompass areas including Dada, Cubism, Surrealism, Vorticism, German Expressionism, and foremost, the Russian Avant-Garde 1910-1930.

The 111 Minna art gallery in San Francisco hosts both local and international artists showcasing all types of art from contemporary paintings to live performance, from music DJing to films. It was established in 1993 and showcases the work from local and international artists.

This 4,000 square foot gallery encompasses the ‘coolness’ of art and is certainly no place to go if you are looking for work from the old masters. No, the driver of the 111 Minna art gallery is to emit to the San Francisco art scene an ever changing and dynamic exhibition portfolio of the latest contemporary art. We throughly enjoyed ourselves here, attending the ‘Under the Sun’ exhibit, which was a surf documentary by Cyrus Sutton.

The physical environment at 111 Minna Gallery is an ideal setting for what the gallery is trying to achieve. The 16 foot high walls with floor to ceiling windows gives the feeling of an urban warehouse with exposed piping and hardwood floors.

Please bear in mind that you have to be 21 or over to attend mainly due to alcohol being sold on site. This does however, give the gallery a certain hipness and indeed a great place for a first or second date if you are looking to impress.

From the 111 Minna Gallery website – all credit 111 Minna Gallery:

The sophisticated modern design of the space is animated by a 25 foot long rolled steel and copper bar created by Bay Area sculptor Jud Bergeron, multifunctional theatrical lighting designed by Terry Ohm of Impact Lighting and an eclectic mix of modern and antique furnishings.

111 Minna Gallery transforms itself every 6 weeks with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art, providing an ever-changing, dynamic atmosphere. The L-shaped gallery measures over 4,200 square feet and can be divided into smaller, more intimate spaces and can accommodate groups of 75 to 500 people.

Le Trianon Fine Art and Antiques Gallery, established in 1978, has for over the past 25 years been the source for museum quality period antiques, decorative arts and fine art.

This gallery in San Francisco prides itself on its high quality staff and their cumulative abundance of knowledge and experience. Le Trianon Fine Art and Antiques Gallery provides a great service to the consummate collector and the museums.

We enjoyed nosing about at the stunning collection of work on display as well as finding out from the staff what had been through the doors of the gallery in the past. This statement from the owner, Eric Sarbib says it all when it comes to the experience you can expect with Le Trianon Fine Art and Antiques Gallery:

“We are delighted to speak with interested parties regarding their collecting goals, and will assist in any way possible with the attainment of these goals. We are dedicated to making your experience with Le Trianon Gallery an enjoyable one”.

The John Pence Art Gallery in San Francisco is one of the original realist galleries in North America. Established over 30 years ago, the gallery primarily exhibits work from living academic artists but also displays art from 19th and 20th century painters.

There are approximately 10 exhibits per year either showing work from individual artists or work from a collection of artists that have been invited from around North America that align with a certain theme.

We were made to feel welcome when we visited and our questions were embraced by the helpful staff. There was little coercion to buy anything as well. However, if you are a serious realist collector then this is a good place to stop off although you do need to make an appointment first. The website will give you more details.

You will find artwork from Juliette Aristides, William Bartlett, Michael Bergt, Jacob Collins, Tony Curanaj, Donald Demers, Carl Dobsky, Douglas Flynt, Adam Forfang Sarah Lamb, Dean Larson, Kate Lehman, Steven J. Levin, Joseph McGurl, Edward Minoff, Dorothy Morgan, Jacob A. Pfeiffer, Nicholas M. Raynolds, Travis Schlaht, Stock Schlueter, Randall Sexton, Hugh Shurley, Anthony Waichulis, and Will Wilson.

The John Pence Gallery represents the estates of Minerva J. Chapman (1858-1947), Mary Foote (1872-1968), and Robert Maione (1932-1987).

The gallery also carries examples of work by earlier American realists and has in its inventory (or recently sold) works by George Henry Boughton, Robert Brackman, Emil Carlsen, John F. Carlson, Frank Herrmann, Ferdinand Kaufmann, John Koch, Otis Oldfield, Walter Launt Palmer, Ferdinand Richardt, Frederick Shafer, Karl Schmidt, John Sloan, Millard Sheets, Joseph Stella, Gardner Symons, Abbott Thayer, Walter Ufer, Edward Vysekel, Marion Wachtel, Harry Wickey, and Harvey Otis Young.

From the John Pence Gallery website – all credit John Pence Gallery:

The gallery is San Francisco’s largest [realist galleries], including more than 8,000 square feet of prime exhibition space. Visitors are welcomed, without pressure, and are encouraged to seek answers to questions about works on view, artists represented, and art in general. The staff is knowledgeable and collector-friendly.
